Reading and Phonics Schemes

Here at Liskeard Hillfort Primary School our goal for ALL of our children is to develop a love of reading .There is strong evidence linking reading for pleasure and educational outcomes. We know that academic attainment is of vital importance, but the benefits of reading for pleasure go beyond this and stretch throughout a person’s life.
Learning to read through phonics.
We teach our very youngest children to read through a phonics scheme called Read Write Inc.
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 4 to 7 year-olds learning to read and write and for 7 and 8 year-olds needing to catch up quickly.
During their time in EYFS children learning through Read Write Inc will;
- Read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge
- Take home Phonics storybooks to share
- Read with fluency and expression
By the end of Year One Most children will have developed into confident and speedy readers.
Some children do take longer to learn to read and the delivery of Read Write Inc. is such that children who need to can continue to take part in daily phonics sessions until they have developed the skills to become an independent reader.
As children move on from the Read Write Inc. scheme in Year 2 we continue to teach reading skills through both guided reading and individual reading. The children read books from a variety of sources. Scholastic Connectors
As children move in to KS2 they continue to be taught reading skills through a blend of whole class reading and comprehension. Any children who need extra support to develop into speedy and accurate readers in KS2 take part daily in our ‘Fresh Start’ Programme which links to the Read Write Inc. programme.
Key stage 2 children have access to a wide range of books including
- Pearson Project X
- Oxford Reading Tree – Higher level guided reading
- Barrington Stoke – Which is dyslexia friendly and also aimed at reluctant readers.
We also encourage children through the Accelerated Reader program., Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Children pickbooks at their own level and read it at their own pace. When finished, children take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that the child understood what was read.) AR gives children, and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to children set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
