Intent

The aim of Science education is to give pupils the knowledge they need to live healthily and fulfilled lives as well as creating citizens who make positive contributions to the future of our planet and society. We teach Science in a way that fosters a curiosity and a lifelong love for the subject. We will give our students lots of opportunity for practical, hands-on experiences and the knowledge to make sense of and revel in the wonders of the natural world. We will explicitly teach them the skills and knowledge they need to become methodical, analytical and inquisitive scientists. We aim to inspire the next generation of scientific leaders and enable all students to make informed decisions and contribute to creating a sustainable future for our planet.

At Hillfort, Science is taught within our wider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) faculty. In an ever-changing, increasingly technological world, STEM subjects are the key to unlocking future prosperity. At Hillfort, we strongly believe that STEM subjects should be inter-woven to enable children to construct their own knowledge base and contextualise their learning. The importance of developing softer skills (including collaboration, problem solving and self-regulation) alongside subject-specific skills will allow children to embed their understanding whilst enriching their experiences. Children will be inspired and excited.

Implementation

  • In the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception year), children are taught Science in relation to developing their “Knowledge and understanding of the World”.   We aim to develop children’s ability to investigate, to find new ways to do things and to test ideas.  By making observations of animals and plants, children are able to learn to explain why some things occur and to talk about changes.  Children are encouraged to make links with previous learning and to make predictions.
  • In Key Stage One and Two, the National Curriculum is explicitly taught.  Tig Tag, Pixl Science and TAPS (as part of an Education Endowment Foundation research trial) are available to teachers to ensure high quality resourcing is a staple feature of lessons.  As a school we will also soon have access to ‘Explorify’ via Truro and Penwith Trust, our trust sponsor.
  • Throughout KS1/2, Science is taught in two ways.  Firstly, there are explicitly taught lessons within the STEM faculty.  The Science duration, on average, is one hour per week.  In addition, every class will have a specific Science investigation day 6 times per year. 
  • Across both of these formats, we apply and reinforce mathematical skills and concepts that have been learnt in Maths lessons.
  • Specific Scientific vocabulary is taught in Science lessons.  This is supported by some type of physical aid in the room e.g. flip chart paper, vocabulary walls, etc.
  • Children record work in their exercise books.  Where practical work has occurred, this aspect of learning might well be captured in the class ‘floorbook’.
  • Children are assessed using standardised online testing provided by GL Assessment in KS2.  IN KS1 teachers make their own assessments of children’s learning against the national curriculum objectives.  In addition, teachers make use of standard classroom ‘Assessment for Learning’ practice alongside low stakes testing. 
  • In 2019/20, we have organised a Science club with the local secondary school where children go to that school to widen their scientific horizons!
